This is literally the only difference from the many times I have been able to move games between drives in the past.

No doubt the issue hanging me up has to do with the original Steam Install being erased when I reformated.
Once you install it to a different drive with Steam you still have to move it manually later and change the link around. Not in Epic or Steam or Origin or Uplay or. The library manager doesn't let you change what dirve those games are on afterwards afaik. You cant transfer any game that you bought from one marketplace or another. As one final attempt I tried copy-pasting from the HDD to this newest Steam install as well. The mover utility is moot now that you can create libraries on steam on different drives. I tried using SM for THIS version of Steam (which when you try to move games from a HDD to another folder on the same HDD it says isn't necessary). Click on 'move and set Symbolic link' to start the process. Select the destination folder that you want to move all files and subfolders of the source folder to. Select the source folder that contains the files and subfolders that you want to move to a new location. This didn't work either.įinally, I deleted the new Steam Install, and installed another Steam onto the same HDD where all of my Steam backups are stored. The entire process is done in three simple steps: ADVERTISEMENT. Then I tried just copy-pasting games from the HDD to the new Steam install. Steam would not recognize either game, saying that they would have to be downloaded and installed to play.
Steam mover is kind of pointless now as moving installs from one location to. I first tried to install Steam on the SSD, then use SM to create a junction from the HDD location of a couple of game into the newly installed Steam folder where games are supposed to be placed. You can just make your own steam game folder and move your games into it. However, I recently reformatted my PC, so the drive that had Steam on it is wiped clean. It has no file system restrictions and can be moved between NTFS, exFAT, and FAT32. The moved Steam games can be run directly on the external hard drive without downloading again. This worked dozens of times without issue. The App Mover function can transfer all Steam games or non-Steam games to an external hard drive, and the transferred data will not be lost. In some cases I moved games back to the SSD from the HDD if I wanted to play them months later.
